The following locations are involved in campaigns to save geese:

Nackawic, NB

The Story: The Town of Nackawic has had a geese problem for a number of years.  In 2010 they applied and were granted a permit to kill geese.  Due to opposition they backed down.  In 2011 they again received a permit.  The Town stated that the geese were causing a significant mess in their park (due to their droppings) and were chasing away the tourists.  (If you have never been to Nackawic, it is a beautiful small, inland town on the Saint John River with a tiny strip mall, a small park with a “giant axe”, a golf course and a few other small businesses.  It’s primary business is a large pulp and paper mill.  It is a nice little place, but by no means a tourism “hot spot”).  A number of people in opposition to the lethal management solution made attempts to get them to stop.  Offers to clean up after the geese, to perform habitat modifications, to chase the geese away and to raise money for non-lethal management WERE IGNORED.  An undisclosed number of Canada Geese were killed on the weekend of July 15-17, 2011.

HELP: We are STILL asking for your help.  Please contact the town and tell them NOT to kill the geese THIS YEAR (2012).  We also ask that you make any suggestions for non-lethal geese management that you may have.  If you live in the area and wish to volunteer, please let them know what you are willing to do, also go to the Volunteer page and let us know you’d like to help.

Birmingham, Alabama

Please ACT NOW!  There is an active request for signatures on a petition.    The petition states ”Last summer the USDA's Wildlife Services gassed 200 Canada geese and muskovy and mallard ducks at 3 city parks in Birmingham, AL., without telling anyone. The Airport Authority won't say how much the round-ups cost an already cash-strapped community or who authorized them. It is expected that there will be a repeat this summer unless stopped”.   PLEASE got to the link and sign the petition.  Also ask others to sign it as well…

Novi, Michigan

The geese at The Portsmouth, The Springs, Westlake and Hillside apartments in Novi, Michigan need your help. These apartments have ponds with no goose deterrents. They have a permit to do nest and egg removal, but choose not to do this, instead they "just do the round-up".

Please write to the owners of these complexes and tell them what they are doing is wrong and offer suggestions!
